Dubai Duty Free reports 20% sales growth in 2006

The retailer has reported another record year, with sales reaching $712m in 2006

Dubai Duty Free has announced record yearly sales for 2006. Sales reached $712m, representing a 20% increase on the previous year. The company said that although there was a consistent rise throughout the year, sales rose strongly in the last quarter, reaching $80m in December alone.

The top three product categories all achieved strong sales, with fragrances performing best at $96m, representing a 28% increase over 2005. Liquor was in second place and showed a 20% increase while gold was the third best-selling category with a 19% increase in sales. Notable increases were also recorded in cosmetics, which rose by 40%, while the Gifts from Dubai shop showed a 32% increase in sales.

Dubai Duty Free managing director Colm McLoughlin said: “2006 has been a fantastic year for the operation, which on average handled over 44,000 sales transactions a day. These figures are an indication of the hard work undertaken by our team.”
