Similarly gold experienced a 17.5% sales increase and continued to retain the position as the highest selling category, accounting for $15m. Electronics sales rose by a startling 71%, making this the fourth highest category.

Managing director of Dubai Duty Free, Colm McLoughlin, said: "With the increase in sales of mobile phones, computers and audio visual equipment, we have witnessed a huge leap in the electronics category. Other categories showing a marked increase in the first six months include jewellery, which rose by 37% and ladieswear which is up by 139%."

"We are delighted with the results for the first six months of the year and the recognition achieved," added McLoughlin. "The main focus will be to continue the momentum for the second half and make 2001 another year to remember."
