The north terminal will add 50,000sq ft (4,645sq m) to the airport’s concessions space

The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) has approved contracts to add more than 30 new shops and restaurants at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County airport’s new north terminal, due to open in autumn 2008. The new terminal will add 50,000sq ft (4,645sq m) to the airport’s concessions space, including 14 new gift, news and speciality stores.

WCAA CEO Lester Robinson said: "With this vote of confidence from our board members, these new restaurant and retail spaces will bring a new level of quality, variety and choice to passengers dining and shopping at our efficient new north terminal. These new concessions will be a tremendous boost for our local economy, creating 740 new jobs and generating more than $24m in economic impact."

Detroit Metro airport's senior vice-president of business development Jack Vogel said: "The north terminal concession programme is projected to increase [the airport’s] concession sales by more than 30%, and generate about $7.6m in additional concession revenue for the airport during the terminal's first year of operation."

Duty Free Americas will operate the duty-free stores at the new terminal. Other outlets will include Relay, USA Today Travel Zone, Borders and XpresSpa.
