Newly-refurbished Delhi Indira Ghandi International airport is to hold a briefing for terminal three concessions next month for companies interested in bidding for the retail space

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) is to hold a briefing for terminal three concessions on December 16 2008, according to local media reports.

The bidding process is expected to take place in 2009 and the space will be leased for seven years. Sources close to the development say that 400 global brands have already expressed an interest in bidding for the stores.

DIAL CEO BS Shantharaju told Indian newspaper The Economic Times: “At present there is only about 800sq m (8,608sq ft) of retail space [at Delhi], but we hope to have about 20,000sq m (215,200sq ft) [when the new terminal three opens in 2010]. In December we are launching our marketing plan that will see all the top brands coming to India.”

The news follows Alpha Group’s purchase of Indian retailer Pantaloon Retail’s 50% stake in Alpha Future Airport Retail, a 50:50 joint venture established in 2006 to operate duty-free outlets at the airport.
