Construction has begun on a new €1bn ($1.35bn) airport in Tripoli, according to the Lybian government. Retail concessions have yet to be announced, but construction is expected to be concluded within two years.

Project director Abdel Majid Sadah told JANA news agency that the work is being carried out by a consortium of six companies including Vinci of France, Odebrecht of Brazil and Turkish firm TAV Construction, under the supervision of a French research consultancy. Sadah added that the site will be able to handle up to 100 planes.

Lybia’s transport minister Mohammed Abu Ajila is reported as saying that the new airport would bring “radical change” to the country’s air transport sector, also mentioning that a further €2bn ($2.7bn) have been earmarked for investment in other airports in the country.
