Renovations at Kuala Lumpur International airport and a fall in passenger numbers has affected the retailer’s sales

Malaysian beauty retailer Colours & Fragrances reported “sluggish” sales at its Kuala Lumpur International airport (KLIA) store for the year to August compared with the previous corresponding period due to slow passenger traffic and concourse renovations. Sales were up by 8% but the company was forecasting double-digit growth for the interval. Passenger numbers fell by 4% at KLIA’s main and international satellite terminals.

Colours & Fragrances buyer Amy Chew said: “KLIA’s renovations started in May and all concourse promotions have been put on hold as retailers are occupying the area while their shops are undergoing work. We have lost prime opportunities to run concourse promotions to generate additional sales.”

Fragrances account for over 65% of the retailer’s sales at KLIA. Space at its current 152sq m (1,635sq ft) store, located between gates 31 and 37 in the satellite terminal, will more than double after renovations are completed at the end of the year. The new-look outlet will open in January.
