Incumbent retailer Alpha Kreol awaits the appointment of a new managing director at the airport following the popular Keralan businessman's departure

Cochin International airport (CIAL) managing director VJ Kurian has stepped down from the role to take the same position at the Kerala Spice Board. Kurian has managed the private airport since he oversaw its funding and construction in 1999. A replacement is expected to be announced shortly.

The consequences for the development of duty-free retailoperated by Alpha Retail under a management contract from CIALwill depend on the identity of the new managing director, an Alpha spokesperson told DFNI Asia. "Alpha has built up a strong relationship with Kurian over the past seven years and he has been very supportive of building the retail business at the airport. Now we will have to start the relationship-building process all over again, but we hope the new managing director will be equally supportive."

The spokesperson confirmed that the airport management changes would not affect plans to expand the departures store at Cochin airport, scheduled to take place in July.
