Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has completed the construction of Singapore Changi airport's new low-cost terminal, scheduled to come into service on March 26. At a formal ceremony held today (January 9), Singapore's transport minister Yeo Cheow Tong named the facility the Budget Terminal, a name chosen from 12,000 entries to a public competition.Following an inspection of the terminal, Yeo said: "This is a significant moment for Changi airport. Low-cost carriers today account for approximately 10% of Changi's total passenger flights, and will be a high-growth segment of the civil aviation sector in the Asia/Pacific region in the coming years. When the Budget Terminal opens for operations in March, Singapore will be better positioned to meet the needs and commercial considerations of our low-cost airline partners by providing low-cost infrastructure and facilities."
The new terminal will have an annual capacity of 2.7m, with scope to expand to 5m. It will contain 3,000sq m (32,280sq ft) of space for retail and catering, including two duty-free shops and a further 11 outlets offering gifts, confectionery, fashion, accessories and general merchandise. CAAS said the retail mix was designed to offer "value and variety".
The retail tenders launched by CAAS in the budget terminal did not attract a large number of bids. Click here to read more.
