Cardiff airport's passenger terminal is to expand as part of a £100m development strategy

Airport authority TBI is to spend £100m on expanding Cardiff airport as part of a 24-year development strategy. The terminal building and car parking facilities will be extended in an effort to keep up with projected passenger traffic, forecast to reach 8m by 2030. At present 1.9m travellers use the airport.

The plans were drawn up in response to a UK government white paper on air transport, which recommended that Cardiff maintain its status as Wales' principal airport. The developments will allow Cardiff to compete with nearby Bristol airport, which launched its own 25-year development strategy in 2005.

The announcement follows news that TBI has granted The Nuance Group a five-year extension to its contract at Cardiff and is discussing how to create a closer partnership with the retailer.
