Canadian national land border sales fall as airport sales increase

Land border sales fell in March compared with the same month last year but airport sales grew
Canadian national land border sales fell by 6.8% in March 2008 compared with the same month last year, to C$9.3m ($9.2m), according to the latest figures from the Canada Border Services Agency and the Frontier Duty Free Association. Sales from January to March 2008 dropped by 7.3% to C$24m ($23.7m). Canadian airport duty-free sales increased by 13.2% to C$15.9m ($15.7m) in March compared with the same month last year, and from January to March 2008 grew by 17.7% to C$43.4m ($42.9m).
Pacific land border sales rose by 2.2% in March to C$1.5m ($1.5m) compared with March 2007, but sales from January to March dropped by 2.1% on the previous year to C$3.7m ($3.6m). Prairie land border sales rose by 1.8% in March to C$728,734 ($721,162) and from January to March increased by 5.5% to C$2m ($1.9m). By contrast, Ontario land border sales fell by 11.5% in March to C$5.4m ($5.3m), and from January to March were down by 10% to C$13.8m ($13.6m). In the Atlantic/Quebec region, sales fell by 1.9% to C$1.7m ($1.7m) and from January to March were down 8.1% to C$4.4m ($4.3m).
Canadian national land border sales in the arts and crafts category fell by 30.3% in March to C$6,543 ($6,470), with sales in the other category up by 13.5% to C$28,358 ($28,043). In Pacific land border stores glassware sales rose by 84.4% to C$15,458 ($15,273) and accessories sales increased by 23.3% to C$31,947 ($31,565). In the Atlantic/Quebec region, accessories sales were up by 21.5% to C$34,497 ($34,085), electronics sales rose by 47% to C$2,419 ($2,390), but glassware sales fell 44% to C$7,117 ($7,032). In Ontario, sales in the other category increased by 117% to C$24,805 ($24,508). At airports, glassware sales rose by 1,051% to C$313,432 ($309,685) in March 2008 compared with C$27,224 ($26,898) in the same month last year. Glassware sales increased 452% between January and March to C$370,169 ($365,744) year on year. In the Prairie region, sales in the other category grew by 197.7% to C$409 ($404) in March 2008 compared with March 2007. From January to March 2008 sales in the category rose by 219.3% to C$710 ($702).
