Canadian land border sales up 3.7% in May

Land border duty-free sales rose in May 2009 compared with the same month in 2008 while airport sales fell
Canadian land border sales rose by 3.7% in May 2009 compared with the same month last year to C$12.1m ($10.6m), according to figures from the Frontier Duty Free Association and Canada Border Services Agency. But sales in the electronics category dropped by 38% to $3,611 ($3,154), while arts and crafts sales fell by 27.6% to C$9,235 ($8,068). Sales from January to May 2009 increased by 3.1% year on year to C$45.5m ($39.7m) despite a 41.7% drop in sales of electronics to C$13,728 ($11,990). Jewellery sales rose by 27% to C$1.4m ($1.2m) year on year.
Airport duty-free sales dropped by 10.4% year on year in May 2009 to C$12.6m ($11m). Sales in the other category fell by nearly 100%, while sales of clothing were down by 32.9% to C$291,984 ($255,098). From January to May 2009 sales dropped by almost 1% compared with the same period last year to C$71.5m ($62.5m). In the other category, sales plummeted by almost 100%, but beer sales rose by 35.2% to C$146,153 ($127,700).
In the Pacific region sales in May rose by 15.5% year on year to C$2m ($1.7m), driven by a 198% sales increase in the jewellery category to C$139,872 ($122,184). From January to May 2009 sales rose by 14% year on year to C$7.7m ($6.7m) boosted by a 247.2% increase in jewellery sales to C$588,178 ($513,749).
Sales in Ontario increased by 5.2% in May 2009 compared with the same month the previous year to C$7m ($6.1m), driven by a 15.9% rise in liquor sales to C$3.1m ($2.7m) and a 13% increase in sales of accessories to C$75,973 ($66,398). From January to May 2009 sales were up by 4.1% year on year to C$26.4m ($23.1m) despite a 29.3% fall in sales of office and travel supplies to C$47,518 ($41,513) and a 23.7% drop in the glassware category to C$218,600 ($190,975).
In the Atlantic/Quebec region sales in May 2009 dropped by 3.4% compared with May 2008 to C$2.4m ($2.1m). Electronics sales fell by 49.4% to C$1,504 ($1,310), while arts and crafts sales were down by 43% to C$3,030 ($2,636). But sales off office and travel supplies were up by 49.3% to C$22,988 ($20,013). Sales from January to May 2009 fell by 1.1% year on year to C$8.3m ($7.2m), with electronics sales down by 47% to C$5,589 ($4,866).
Prairie land border duty-free sales dropped by 11.4% in May 2009 year on year to C$726,696 ($632,713). Electronics sales fell by 77% to C$172 ($150), jewellery sales were down by 63.2% to C$9,451 ($8,234) and souvenir sales dropped by 49.9% to C$5,418 ($4,720). Between January and May 2009 sales decreased by 15.5% compared with the same period in 2008 to C$3m ($2.6m). Electronics sales fell by 77% to C$907 ($790) while jewellery sales dropped by 49.5% to C$27,646 ($24,096).
