Canadian land border sales fall as airport sales rise

Land border duty-free sales fall in May compared with the same month last year while airport sales grow
Canadian land border duty-free sales fell by 6.5% to C$11.7m ($11.5m) in May 2008 compared with the same month last year, according to figures from Canada Border Services Agency and the Frontier Duty Free Association. Sales in the electronics category fell by 29.9% to C$5,825 ($5,720), while sales in the other category increased by 27.5% to C$28,750 ($28,225). Total sales from January to May 2008 were down by 9% to C$44.1m ($43.2m) compared with the same period last year despite a 19% sales increase in the other category to C$121,000 ($118,676).
The airport duty-free sector enjoyed a better performance, with total sales up by 14.2% to C$14.0m ($13.7m). Clothing sales grew by 100.5% to C$434,885 ($426,737) and sales of office and travel supplies rose by 87% to C$608,340 ($597,088). Sales in the other category fell 91% to C$55 ($54). From January to May total sales rose by 16.2% to C$70.8m ($69.5m) year on year, with sales of accessories up by 42% to C$2.5m ($2.4m). Sales in the other category dropped by 99.8% to C$299 ($293).
According to regional land border figures, sales in the Prairie region grew by 5% in May to C$819,700 ($804,540) with sales of jewellery, watches and clocks rising by 170% to C$25,690 ($25,219) and sales in the other category growing by 144% to C$818.45 ($802.65). From January to May sales in the region were up by 4.8% year on year to C$3.5m ($3.4m). Sales in the other category rose by 141% to C$2,000 ($1,964) compared with the same period last year.
In the Pacific region sales increased by 1% to C$1.7m ($1.6m), with sales of office and travel supplies showing significant growth of 89% to C$4,420 ($4,335). Sales from January to May dropped by 4.3% year on year to C$6.8m ($6.7m), while sales in the other category fell by 75.5% to C$7,280 ($7,150).
In Ontario land border sales dropped by 10.6% to C$6.6m ($6.5m), while sales of art and craft products fell by 31.7% to C$5,630 ($5,525) and sales in the other category rose by 34.4% to C$19,640 ($19,273). Sales over the first five months of 2008 were down by 12.3% to C$25.3m ($24.8m) year on year, while sales in the other category dropped by 70.4% to C$97,970 ($96,124).
In the Atlantic/Quebec region sales fell by 3.3% to C$2.5m ($2.4m) in May despite an increase in sales of 58.7% in the other category to C$6,360 ($6,238). Sales from January to May saw an even greater increase of 9.1% to C$8.4m ($8.2m).
