Canada to ease airport retail restrictions

Transport Canada has rethought the tough stance it adopted on restrictions to airport retail following the foiled UK terror plot of August 10

Canadian airport retailers will be allowed to sell liquids, gels and aerosols direct to all passengers other than those travelling to the US by the end of the week. National transport authority Transport Canada said that from 3am on Friday (September 22) it would repeal regulations which only allowed sales by gate delivery.

Canada's tough stance on retail restrictions at airports has been a source of strife for the country's major airport retailers The Nuance Group and Aer Rianta International, which have been forced to operate limited opening hours at several locations, while Nuance has had to reduce shop staff and close some stores.

Passengers bound for the US from airports providing Customs and immigration pre-clearance will still not be allowed to buy liquids, said Transport Canada.

"Canada continues to work closely with our partners in the US and in Europe, including the UK, in order to determine whether any further changes to the security restrictions currently in place for these items are warranted," the agency said.
