The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has awarded the contract to upgrade Singapore Changi airport terminal one to Takenaka Corp. The $500m project, which aims to improve passenger flow at the 27-year-old terminal, is due to begin in May 2008 for completion in 2011. The areas to be upgraded include the façade, the departure check-in hall, the departure transit mall and the arrivals hall. The T1 building will be expanded to allow for the provision of new passenger facilities while expanding the retail and food and beverage offer. Older sections of the piers will be expanded and seating in the holding areas by the gates will be enhanced.
CAAS director general and CEO Lim Kim Choon said: “Many of us have fond memories of T1, which is synonymous with the birth of Changi airport in 1981. It is time for our grand old dame to get a refreshing makeover. T1's upgrade is part of our infrastructure improvement plans. With the recently renovated T2 and newly opened T3, T1's facelift will ensure that all passengers at Changi airport can enjoy the same exciting, vibrant and enjoyable experience."
