The Bulgarian Association of Duty-Free Enterprises has called for international support in the fight to retain its border duty-free business. Operators are to seek parliamentary reprise from last week's decision by the finance ministry to close the country's port and border stores on January 1 2004.

The Bulgarian Association of Duty-Free Enterprises has called for international support in the fight to retain its border duty-free business. Association president Radostin Genov revealed that operators will seek parliamentary reprise from last week's decision by finance minister Milen Velchev to close the country's port and border stores on January 1 2004. The closures, which the association estimates will cost Eu450m until the country's accession to the EU in 2007, must be approved by parliament before existing legislation is amended. If approved, Velchev hopes the move will counter growing smuggling at Bulgaria's borders.
