The country’s government plans to remodel Bulgaria’s border checkpoints to comply with European standards

The Bulgarian Duty Free and Travel Retail Association is drafting a document outlining a new border shopping centre concept after a request from the government, according to local website Pari Daily. The retail concept will be part of a detailed plan for remodelling Bulgaria’s border checkpoints to comply with European standards.

The report claims trade association chairman Radostin Genov said that fashion products, accessories and luxury goods should be added to the offer available at border shops, which currently sell only alcohol, tobacco products and fragrances. The turnover of duty-free operators in Bulgaria is said to have dropped by 50% in 2007 due to delays in the relocation of shops from the arrivals to the departures area at airports.
