The Design Solution and Airport Solutions will focus on increasing Xianyang airport’s commercial revenues

British companies The Design Solution and Airport Solutions, with technical support from engineering company Arup, have been selected to explore the commercial potential of Xi’an Xianyang airport terminal three, which has been designed by Atkins following an international competition and will cover 170,000sq m (1.83m sq ft). The Design Solution has already worked in Xi’an, where in 2001 it developed the commercial facilities at Xianyang T2.

The Design Solution director Robbie Gill said: “We looked at the winning design and immediately it was apparent that the terminal was not designed to maximise retail opportunities, but the stage of the terminal development was early enough to have a major input. Flows were analysed and projections generated, resulting in a range of solutions that varied to take into account the operational and development issues. Although there is a long way to go, we are going to achieve something really special and very different for China.”
