The airport officially opened its new airside retail area yesterday, including a big new store run by incumbent duty-free retailer The Nuance Group

Bristol International airport unveiled its refurbished airside retail and catering offer yesterday (June 19). The airport's departures lounge, where The Nuance Group has run duty-free since March 2000, has undergone a total transformation taking inspiration from high street concepts. The £7m ($13m) development brings the total number of airside shops from nine to 15, with retail and catering space increasing by 40%.

Nuance has increased its floor space by 50% to 620sq m (6,670sq ft), enabling it to create areas for precious gifts and electronics and to double the space allocated to liquor. A dedicated watches and jewellery area has also been added, showcasing brands such as Montblanc, Gucci, Hot Diamonds, Swarovski, Breil and Fossil.

Among the concepts introduced by Nuance at Bristol is Fashion Gallery, which provides a platform for brands such as Ted Baker, Hugo Boss, Simon Carter, O'Neill, Chilli Pepper, Animal and Diesel. Single-price accessories concept Bijoux Terner has doubled the size of its previous unit, which opened in May 2005.

An area for brand promotions has been added, along with a Market Place concept offering new launches and a rolling programme of special offers aimed at Bristol's large number of frequent flyers.

A new sunglasses area is designed to capitalise on strong sales at Bristol, where Nuance said spend per head on the category was higher than any other outlet across the retailer's network.

In confectionery, Nuance has replicated its Chocolate Box concept introduced at London Heathrow airport terminal one.

The Nuance Group managing director UK and Eire John Brocklebank said: "The new flagship store takes our partnership with Bristol International to a whole new level. Our range of products has grown enormously, with all of the world's leading fragrance and cosmetics houses represented along with specialist malt and deluxe whiskies and a range of premium champagnes not easily found on the high street. Wedded to our ranges of Armani watches, Breil and Fossil jewellery, and designer clothing and accessories available in our Fashion Gallery store, we have a fantastic collection of brands and products designed to appeal to a wide range of the increasingly affluent passengers flying from Bristol International."

UK high street retail brands Superdrug and Soho Coffee have made their airport debuts at Bristol, which now boasts the biggest WH Smith outlet in a UK regional airport, along with Claire's Accessories biggest airport store.

The airport said that as a result of the redevelopment it had created 85 new jobs.
