After Rio de Janeiro, the retailer plans to introduce the concept to Sao Paolo departures later this year

Brazil's leading travel retailer Brasif will open its first stand-alone destination merchandise concept, called Do Brasil (From Brazil), at Rio de Janeiro airport in September. The 100sq m (1,080sq ft) departures shop will target the increasing numbers of overseas travellers visiting Brazil, but also Brazilians looking for a gift to take with them abroad.

Brasif director-general Gustavo Fagundes told RavenFox.com: "Brazilian products account for 10% of our sales in departures, although we've only been allowed to sell them for less than two years. This store aims to take advantage of that growth, and means we can offer a bigger range. We can now introduce Brazilian cosmetics, we'll have space for music, as well as more room for fashion, food and Brazilian drinks."

Brasif works with a number of beachwear and fashion designers well-known to Brazilians, who have created exclusive products for the retailer. Fagundes said: "Because Brazilians know we are the only source for this kind of merchandise, they buy it as a gift or even for themselves. So we are not just targeting departing foreigners."

Fagundes described the first store as a template for future destination outlets. "We already plan to target it at travellers at Sao Paolo departures," he said. "We would hope to have that shop open before the end of the year."
