Commercial space has increased by 60% in the new development opened earlier this week

George Best Belfast City International airport has completed the first phase of its £6m terminal redevelopment programme with the opening of a new departures lounge on the first floor.

The new-look departures lounge is capable of handling 12,000 passengers per day and retail space has increased by 60%. The BMI and flybe lounges have also been re-located and refurbished and security search facilities will be increased to reduce queuing at peak times. The development is scheduled to be completed by summer 2010.

George Best Belfast City International airport chief executive Brian Ambrose said: "Passengers will see a remarkable difference when departing the airport. This significant private investment will enhance the customer experience as we aim to stay ahead of the curve in accommodating increasing passenger numbers."
