Increased passenger traffic, adjustments to retail layout and the introduction of new brands have led to a 15% increase in duty-free revenues at the airport
Duty-free revenues at Beijing Capital International Airport grew by 15% in 2005, boosted by increased passenger traffic. An average of 12,000 daily departing passengers used the airport, while adjustments to the airport's retail layout – and the introduction of new brands – also boosted the retail performance. In international terminal two, the Hermes boutique was moved to the front of the terminal, just after security and in direct view of passengers making their way airside. In its old space a dedicated cigar store has been added, with space divided between premium brands Davidoff and Habanos.
An informed source told DFNI Asia that the aim of the changes had been primarily to enhance the image of the airport's retail offer to passengers. "Passengers identify Beijing as the number one airport in China and so they expect to be able to buy the best brands here, as well as liquor, tobacco and confectionery brands. The main function of fashion, accessories and luxury brands is not necessarily to capture a large market share but to increase the attractiveness of airport shopping."
Sunrise Duty Free, which won the tender to operate duty-free retail at Beijing last year, took over management of the airport's duty-free stores at the beginning of 2006.
