The Bared Group, which operates a string of duty-free outlets across the Caribbean, has taken full control of Alliance Duty Free, its joint venture with World Duty Free Americas. BAA confirmed its exit from the operation.

Alliance Duty Free holds the exclusive rights to the duty-free stores and newsstands in San Juan Luis Munoz Marin airport. The partnership opened three new stores in the airport at the end of last year. The companies had also combined their purchasing for the region.

"The Bared Group intends to continue to expand and improve the operations at the airport of San Juan," said Luis Bared, president and ceo of the Bared Group. The airport of San Juan services 14m international passengers a year, many of them US citizens on their way to a Caribbean cruise who are entitled to a full duty-free allowance on their way home to the US.
