The operation posts a 7.76% increase in sales driven by passenger growth, Bahrain’s Formula One Grand Prix and successful marketing initiatives

Bahrain Duty Free, managed by Aer Rianta International-Middle East, posted a 7.76% increase in sales last year to reach BD31.2m ($83m). The company said that a 9.3% rise in passenger traffic, strong sales during the Bahrain Formula One racing meeting in March and successful marketing initiatives drove the growth.

Consolidated gross profit reached BD10.1m ($26.8m), up 10.98% on the previous year. Overheads and operating expenses were BD5.3m ($14.1m), net operating profit before royalties was BD5.1m ($13.5m)—up 17.78% on last year, and non-operating income grew 38.51% to BD2.8m ($7.43m).

Bahrain Duty Free chairman Farouk Al Moayyed said: “In addition to the improving passenger flow through Bahrain International airport, our retail strategy continues to concentrate on our core internal business drivers, improving the number of passengers spending in duty-free and the average sale value to each of our customers.”

Al Moayyed added: "A number of developments for this year and beyond are in discussion stage and we hope to announce more details on these later in the year. We envisage that these developments will continue to reinforce and enhance the reputation of Bahrain Duty Free as a premier travel retailer in the region and the world.”
