BAA chief executive Mike Hodgkinson welcomed today's decision to permit the building of a fifth terminal at London Heathrow airport. He said it was "good news for the economy, the aviation industry, the travelling public and for the local community which has won sensible safeguards."

Hodgkinson said: "Terminal five remains vital to Heathrow's future success as the country's main international hub and approval to proceed is a huge boost for the aviation industry. The decision means that the UK will get the world class 21st century international gateway it needs and that the long term prospects for London's business community and tourist industry have been significantly enhanced."

"We have been through the most comprehensive planning inquiry ever seen in the UK. Clearly we will need time to study the details of this important decision but we are obviously pleased to have a favourable result."
