New routes stimulate traffic growth at BAA UK airports

BAA's UK airports welcomed a total of 12.3m passengers in May, 5% more than they did in the same month last year. All seven UK airports recorded gains, but Southampton topped the list with a 30% traffic rise.

BAA attributed Southampton's sustained and impressive growth to the expansion of routes by airline Flybe to include French destinations Rennes, Bordeaux and Leeds and Liverpool in the UK.

Edinburgh also performed well, a new daily scheduled service to the US contributing to its 12.3% increase.  Glasgow has launched a new low-cost service which BAA claims has stimulated growth on Irish routes by 10.6%.

Throughout BAA's network, European charter traffic was down, this time by 8.6%. European scheduled traffic rose by 7.4% and domestic traffic increased by 5.7%.
