Auckland International airport announced the development of a supermarket at its landside Airport Shopping Centre yesterday. The 2,000sqm(21,520 sq ft) Foodtown supermarket will be built adjacent to The Warehouse, the existing anchor store in the Centre.

Auckland International Airport managing director, John Goulter, said the supermarket, which is scheduled to open on September 23, is a "logical and important" addition to the Airport Shopping Centre. The Centre which opened in November last year currently has six tenants and further expansion is likely, Goulter said.

"We have received many inquiries for space since the centre opened and as a result we are now working on plans for the second stage of the Airport Shopping Centre," Goulter said.

The wider airport community is expected to provide a large potential market for the new development, including the 7,500 people who work at the airport, 8m annual passengers plus an estimated 20m visitors.
