The City of Atlanta has re-tendered the duty-free concession at Atlanta-Hartsfield Jackson International airport, subject of a continuing legal battle
Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International airport has re-tendered the duty-free concession at the airport's concourse E. The move follows years of wrangling over the result of a tender announced in early 2004, when Duty Free Air and Ship Supply (DFASS) was appointed to replace HMSHost as Atlanta's duty-free concessionaire. Rival bidder Duty Free Atlanta—a Duty Free Americas (DFA) joint venture—protested against the award, forcing the airport to retain the services of HMS Host on a rolling basis. The airport has long harboured plans to re-tender its duty-free business (DFNI April 15 2005) but said it would wait until DFA's legal action was resolved. However RavenFox.com understands that a settlement has yet to be reached.
Bidders are required to purchase the instructions, plans and specifications from Atlanta City Hall at a cost of $25 per set and all interested parties are invited to attend a pre-bid conference on June 20 at 10am, when representatives from the city's departments of procurement and aviation will discuss plans for the project. The deadline for bid submission is 1.59pm on August 2 and the names of the bidders will be announced at 2pm at City Hall.
Both DFASS and DFA are expected to submit bids. The Nuance Group North America will also monitor the opportunity closely. The retailer's vice-president business development John Menchella told DFNI last year that Nuance would examine the opportunity and place a bid provided the terms were right.
Other potential bidders include Aer Rianta International-North America and Dufry Americas.
