Asia/Pacific arrivals up 4.7% in 2006 so far

The Pacific Asia Travel Association has reported an increase in international visitor arrivals, with particularly strong growth in south and southeast Asia
International visitor arrivals to Asia/Pacific have grown by 4.7% in the year to June 14, according to results collated by the Pacific Asia Travel Association. The association aggregated statistics from 33 countries within the region, with south and southeast Asia destinations recording the strongest growth.Maldives, Thailand and Sri Lanka all noted strong growth in the early months of the year after slow traffic last year following the Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004. Maldives recorded the strongest growth of any destination, with numbers for January to May increasing by 90.5% compared with the same period in 2005. Arrivals to Thailand grew by 29.4% for the same period, while international visitors to Sri Lanka were up by 25%. Laos recorded growth of 39.6% while Cambodia, Macau, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Vietnam and the Philippines all enjoyed growth of 10%-20%.
In the middle growth tier (5%-10%), visitors to Japan increased by 9.2% in the year to the end of April, Nepal welcomed 7.8% more international visitors in the year to May than in the previous corresponding period, and Taiwan recorded an increase of 7.5% in the first three months of 2006.
In the third tier, denoting growth between 0%-5%, mainland China recorded growth of 1.8% for the first three months of the year. Malaysia (3.6%), Guam (2.7%), Hawaii (2.1%) and New Zealand (1.4%) also recorded slow growth.
Among countries to record decreases in international visitor arrivals, numbers to Australia dropped by 0.5%, to South Korea by 1.5% and to Indonesia by 10.2%.
