Asia the only bright spot in airport trends report

7-Dec-2002

The latest results from almost 760 airports collected by Airports Council International (ACI) show global passenger traffic and flight movements were still down 3% and 5% respectively in August compared to a year ago

For the first eight months of 2002 passenger traffic was down 6% and movements down 5% over the same period in 2001.

The two Tokyo airports recorded the highest growth rate in August 2002 with Narita up 11% and Haneda up 5%. Other major gains were recorded at Beijing where traffic was up 4%, Bangkok (+3%), Hong Kong and Amsterdam (both +2%). In the month passenger traffic rose in Asia/Pacific by 3% and in the Middle East by 2%. It remained unchanged in Africa and was down in Europe by 1% and in Latin America/Caribbean by 4%. North American traffic was down by 8% compared to August 2001.

In North America, as in the Middle East, the year-on-year trend worsened slightly.
