The airport expects the arrivals project to help it meet some of its “core objectives” for retail

At the Auckland International Airport (AIAL) annual general meeting earlier this month CEO Don Huse said the airport hopes the first stage of the NZ$98.9m ($74m) arrivals expansion initiative will help it meet some of its core objectives. These include providing “a unique and compelling New Zealand airport experience and delivering outstanding customer service”.

The first phase of the development, scheduled for completion by the middle of next year, will include the construction of a new 1,600sq m (1,722sq ft) duty-free shop. The project is part of a series of initiatives to reinforce brand values and corporate identity in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

The new outlet, operated by DFS Group after it fought off rival The Nuance Group earlier this year, will offer a wide range of international and New Zealand brands.

Huse said: “This year has seen strong interest in Auckland airport’s retail concessions. We achieved positive results from tendering our car rental, duty-free, foreign currency and various specialist retail concessions.”
