The Swiss retailer achieved turnover of SFr244.8m in the first three months of 2006, a year-on-year increase of 24.8%

Dufry Group posted strong sales growth in the first quarter of 2006, reporting turnover of SFr244.8m ($202.3m) compared with SFr196.2m ($162.1m) in the first three months of 2005. Earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation reached SFr17.1m ($14.1m), up from SFr16m ($13.2m) last year. The retailer described the performance as "above expectations".

Dufry said that the sales growth was achieved despite start-up costs associated with new store openings, notably in Palma de Mallorca airport and Carnival Corp's cruise terminal on the Caribbean island of Grand Turk. New openings, such as the Dufry Boulevard in Mexico City International airport unveiled in March, had helped drive sales, said the company.

The retailer's gross profit margin, measured as a percentage of turnover, reached 49.6% in the first quarter, up from 48% last year.

Dufry said it had enjoyed strong sales over the Easter period in mid-April and "has continued to benefit from a friendly business environment since". CEO Julián Díaz said that the consolidation of the Brasif Duty Free Shop and Eurotrade business, acquired in March, was "on track and I am very pleased with the performance so far".

The Americas and Caribbean region is now by far Dufry's biggest operation by sales, contributing SFr102.3m ($84.5m) in the first quarter of 2006, up from SFr74.6m ($61.6m) last year. Europe is the retailer's second most important division, contributing SFr77.8m ($64.3m), followed by Eurasia and Asia (SFr40.7m/$33.6m) and Africa (SFr24.1m/$19.9m).
