The UK retailer opened a World News Café at Bucharest Henri Coanda—formerly Otopeni—airport yesterday (July 11)

In a bid to build its presence in Eastern Europe, Alpha Airports Group has opened a World News Café at Bucharest Henri Coanda—formerly Otopeni—airport. The €5m ($6.3m) project was unveiled by CEO Peter Williams yesterday (July 11) before an audience of dignitaries and invited guests.

Williams said: "We are keen to strategically position Alpha at the heart of this growing region, as it evolves through EU expansion and integration. As a leader in providing retailing and catering expertise to airports and airlines, Alpha has the ideal portfolio to participate in forthcoming projects such as the retail opportunities following expansion here and the airport catering opportunities at Baneasa airport."

A recent decision by the Romanian government to bring forward the closure of the country's border duty-free stores coincided with the announcement that it was considering reinstating airport duty-free, which was banned in September 2002. A tender for the business at Henri Coanda airport could follow later this year.
