Air India is to take its inflight duty-free programme in-house following its recent global tender.

As a result, incumbent operator Alpha In-Flight Retail will relinquish the concession on September 11.

Alpha Airports Group chief executive Kevin Abbott said: "Alpha is totally committed to developing its business throughout the Indian sub-continent. We have enjoyed our experience over the past three years with Air India, and are very sad to be no longer onboard the airline's programme.

"In looking for enhanced performance for both ourselves and Air India, we were seeking modifications to the airline/concessionaire relationship which Air India was unable to accept. Alpha remains willing to offer its service to Air India on the partnership model that it was proposing and wishes them every success during these exciting times."
