Spanish airport authority AENA is to invest over Eu314m ($407.8m) in upgrading passenger terminals at Alicante Airport

A temporary passenger terminal will be built at a cost of Eu6m ($7.8m) and should be completed by the end of 2005. A new terminal will then be built to the east of the current building. AENA expects the new terminal to be complete within four years. The airside zone will cover over 31,000sq m (333,560sq ft) and will contain 40 boarding gates. A big increase in commercial space is planned with retail and restaurant areas a priority, as the airport authority seeks to improve passenger facilities. Passenger capacity will reach 15m once the construction is complete.

Over 8m passengers used Alicante airport last year, an increase of 16% on 2002. Growth has slowed slightly in 2004 with passenger traffic up by 5% for the first ten months of the year. The total for the year is expected to reach about 8.6m passengers.
