The retailer unveils its expanded duty-free area at Jorge Chavez International airport as the Peru Plaza landside retail centre is inaugurated
Spanish airport retailer Aldeasa has opened its renovated duty-free space at Jorge Chavez International airport in Lima. The company, which last July secured a six-year extension to its contract at the airport until 2011, has invested about $2m in the area, which has been expanded from 880sq m (9,470sq ft) to 1,400sq m (15,070sq ft). The store features new branding playing on Aldeasa's yellow and blue corporate colours, as director of international business Julio López Castaño revealed to delegates at last week's Global Travel Retail Summit.
"We have been working closely with LAP to look at ways of maximising revenues," López told RavenFox.com following the contract extension. "Once the airport renovation is completed, Lima will be an important hub for international traffic in South America, and although there have been some inconveniences during building work, we have been able to increase sales."
Aldeasa's contract includes an option to extend for a further six years provided the retailer meets performance criteria set by the airport authority.
Elsewhere in the airport, landlord Lima Airport Partners (LAP)—a joint venture between Fraport Group and Alterra Partners—has inaugurated the Peru Plaza, a 5,000sq m (538,000sq ft) landside terminal extension which includes retail outlets, catering facilities and other customer services. The facility, which will be fully operational later this month, has been touted as Latin America's only landside airport retail centre and was inaugurated by Peru's president Alejandro Toledo Manrique and Fraport executive board chairman Dr Wilhelm Bender.
