Rome Fiumicino airport authority and operator Aeroporti di Roma (AdR) has revealed plans to expand its duty-free offer and to open two new shops in the first half of 2004. AdR began revamping its own retail outlets last year after The Nuance Group secured a six-year contract to operate12 specialist shops covering 1,800sq m (19,375sq ft) across the terminals.
AdR's stores offer traditional duty-free items including fragrances, liquor, tobacco and confectionery. Nuance's concession covers fashion, accessories and food.
Aeroporti di Roma direct retail manager Stella Terziantz said direct retail sales dropped by 4% year-on-year in 2003 because of reduced space, the withdrawal of several product categories, the cancellation of intercontinental flights and a change in passengers' buying attitudes.
Fragrances account for 50% of sales at Fiumicino, with Chanel, Christian Dior and Lancôme the best-selling brands.
