Aena announces retail overhaul at Málaga
A new walk-through duty-free store will be the centrepiece of the revamped airside retail offer at Málaga airport
Spanish airport company Aena Aeropuertos has announced it is to overhaul the airside retail area at Málaga airport this year. The terminal, which opened two years ago, will benefit from a new walk-through duty-free store and a central plaza that will concentrate the retail and food and beverage offering to passengers.
According to the Aena, the improvements are based on demand and will increase the airside concessions space in the terminal by 21%, with the duty-free area increasing in size by 11% to 3,129sq m and other retail spaces growing 30% to span 2,964sq m by the end of the renovations, scheduled to start in April and finish by March 2014 and being put on hold in the summer to minimise inconvenience during the high season.
Aena said that the new 2,630sq m main walk-through duty-free store, operated by World Duty Free Group following its recent win at the airport company’s tenders across the country, will have projected sales growth of 30% to €68m ($92.3m) in 2014 from €52m ($70.6m) last year. The new central retail area will also feature a 207sq m luxury store dedicated to several fashion and accessories brands, 1,163sq m of space for speciality concessions in the fashion, accessories and homeware categories as well as more than 2,800sq m earmarked for restaurants including a Michelin-starred gourmet concept.
In addition, the non-Schengen zone of the terminal will feature five additional outlets: a 126sq m confectionery and fine foods concept, a 103sq m music and electronics shop, a 130sq m mono-brand sporting goods store, a 132sq m toys concept and a 107sq m jewellery outlet.
The airport company said the changes will bring more comfort and entertainment to passengers, increase variety and bring well-known brands to Málaga, improve the food options and integrate gate displays to increase dwell time.
