The Mexican airport authority's plans to operate its own walk-through store at Cancún T3 were announced at the Duty Free Show of the Americas this week

ASUR commercial director Manuel Gutierrez told RavenFox.com sister publication the Florida Daily that the airport authority is to open a directly-run store in Cancún International's new terminal three, expected to be completed by April 2007. "We will open a 1,850sq m (19,000sq ft) duty-free shop in the new terminal, which we will operate directly," he said. "We expect to take a final decision and confirm the details in the next few weeks. We have presented the concept to suppliers at the show and it has been well-received. The shop will have a walk-through design and we are allocating space to each category."

An 80sq m (860sq ft) gold and silver store and a 300sq m (3,230sq ft) destination product store will also open. Food and beverages will be allocated more than 2,000sq m (22,000sq ft). Gutierrez added: "We are pleased to confirm that traffic is continuing to recover at Cancún. In the year to the end of February 2006, we were only 15% down on the previous year. As more hotels reopen [after last year's hurricane], the recovery will continue."
