Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) the Mexican airport operator of Cancun and eight other regional airports confirmed today the construction of the Shopping Center at Cancun airport is progressing on schedule. The Center is expected to open in the third quarter 2001, as previously announced.

ASUR ceo Frantz Guns commented: "Now that the retail business concession has been awarded, all major building blocks of our commercial development plan are in place or in the final stages of negotiation."

Last week (TRW 23 May) ASUR announced that the consortium of Aldeasa and Brasif was awarded the retail concession for the three largest airports in the group, which includes the Cancun Shopping Center. Last December the food and beverage concession was awarded to Controladora Mera. The winner of the convenience store concession is expected to be announced shortly.

Guns said: "Works on the Cancun Shopping Center continue to make progress. In fact, following the opening of the seating area in January we handed over the food and beverage units to Mera. We expect to be handing over to our retail partners for the International Terminal, Aldeasa and Brasif in line with the original schedule."

ASUR is proceeding legally against some operators of the pre-existing stores whose leases have expired and who are resisting to vacate their premises.
