The Mexican airports group is building a big new facility at the gateway to the Yucatán resort

Mexican airport operator Aeropuertos del Sureste has begun construction work on a new 40,000sq m (430,400sq ft) terminal at Cancún International airport.

The new terminal three will house 84 check-in counters and 15 boarding gates (11 direct gates and 4 via remote stand) and the facility will be fitted with the latest security equipment. The company expects to invest $100m in the new terminal and an additional $50m on a second runway to ensure that anticipated growth at Cancún is not held back once the Yucatán peninsula is fully recovered from last year's Hurricane Wilma. The 2.4km runway is situated 1.5km from the current runway, which allows simultaneous use of both strips.

In 2004 over 10m passengers used Cancún airport. Although traffic fell in 2005 as a result of extensive hurricane damage in the third quarter of the year, the new terminal and runway will allow more than 17m passengers to use the airport.

Retailers at Cancún have told RavenFox.com that sales fell sharply immediately after the hurricane but are expected to return to normal levels in the first quarter of 2006.
