Grupo Aerportuario del Sureste (ASUR), operator of nine airports in southeastern Mexico announced yesterday it has awarded the contract for foreign exchange services at Cancun and Cozumel to American Express. The three-year contract will begin in Autumn 2001.

The award concludes a competitive bidding process that began in April involving five US, European and Mexican financial service companies. A unique bid evaluation model, developed by Copenhagen airport and based on tender code guidelines from Airport Council International (ACI) was used to select the best bid. Both technical and financial proposals put forward by the bidders were considered.

American Express ceo, Edmundo Perez de Cobos, commented: "Since the privatisation process of Mexican airports, ASUR is one of the operators that has shown leadership in the operation and commercialisation of airports. Due to this fact, American Express proudly receives the concession. We are confident that this alliance with ASUR will allow us to be ambassadors of Mexican service quality."

American Express has offered foreign exchange services in Mexico since 1997 and it has offices in Cancun, Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City.
