ASUR awards concession to Aldeasa/Brasif joint venture

Mexican airport authority Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) has announced its decision to award retail contracts at its three largest airports--Cancun, Merida and Cozumel--to the consortium formed by Aldeasa and Brasif. The award includes five traditional duty-free stores, four luxury duty-free outlets, one delicatessen, one cigar store and six duty-paid shops.

The news comes amid confusion over the future of retailing at Cancun airport, where incumbent retailers are said to have formed a committee to take ASUR to court, as reported in Duty-Free News International May 15. ASUR denied this and insisted the new 4,200sq m (15,192sq ft) shopping centre at Cancun would open in September 2001 as planned.
