APTRA calls for input on strategic direction

The regional association seeks to define future goals
In a bid to deliver more value to its members and to prepare for regional developments in the industry, the Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association (APTRA) is communicating more closely with its members in an effort to establish a clear direction for the future.
Following a recent rule change at Tax Free World Association (TFWA), which has allowed APTRA to become an affiliate member of the global tax-free organisation, APTRA members—particularly retailers—now have an opportunity to be represented through the association.
Last month APTRA president Sunil Tuli organised meetings in Hong Kong and Singapore to obtain feedback from members on how the association could benefit the industry and its members, while Alpha Asia managing director Paul Topping held a session in India to review issues in the Indian market. The varied responses were discussed at APTRA’s board meeting on August 28 and key outcomes include a decision to examine joint member research projects and other industry-related issues, such as the potential ASEAN Free Trade agreement now under discussion at intergovernmental level, and liquids, aerosols and gels. APTRA said more details would be provided in the coming months. The association is seeking further views from members to gain more grassroots input rather than leaving it to the board.
Since May, membership of APTRA has risen, with eight new companies joining the association. Tuli said: “Our aim is to increase the number of members quickly, but also to ensure we have a broad representation of different stakeholders, including airlines, airport authorities, operators and suppliers across catering and retail, and from all Asian countries.”
