The authority releases possibly its largest tender to date, for 20 retail outlets at the third largest airport in its network

Spanish airport authority AENA has a announced a major tender for duty-paid concessions at Palma de Mallorca airport in the Balearic Islands. In a departure from the operator's previous strategy of calling tenders for one or two outlets, AENA has published details of the tender for 20 different retail premises.

AENA's intention is to provide passengers at the third biggest airport in its network with a wide variety of products to fit the changing profile and consumption habits of the passengers that use the airport.

The authority intends to contact leading retailers to bring in a new style of retailing to the airport and this will provide opportunities for companies like Inditex, the owners of the Zara fashion chain, and possibly Dufry Group, which may see the tender as an opportunity to break into the Spanish market after failing to acquire Aldeasa last month.
