Fashion dominates the latest tender for space at Madrid Barajas terminal four, due to open next year

As predicted in DFNI October 1, Spanish airport authority AENA has announced a further tender for nine new retail outlets—accounting for more than 2,200sq m (23,670sq ft) of retail space—in Madrid Barajas terminal four, scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2006.

The new outlets will include two general fashion outlets (747sq m/8,040sq ft and 132sq m/1,420sq ft); a woman's fashion outlet (314sq m/3,380sq ft); two electronics outlets (254sq m/2,730sq ft and 116sq m/1,250sq ft); a sports shop (252sq m/2,710sq ft); a toy shop (194sq m/2,090sq ft); a shoe shop (124sq m/1,335sq ft); and an accessories outlet (124sq m).

Bids must be tabled by November 7 and will be opened on November 11. AENA will evaluate the financial proposals as well as the commercial plans submitted by bidding companies.

The new retail space is in addition to the tender for over 460sq m (4,950sq ft) called early last week for three gourmet delicatessen outlets, a travel accessories store and an opticians. Bids for these outlets are expected by November 4 but will be opened on the same day as the bigger tender.

The additional space is AENA's most significant tender since awarding the main travel-retail concession at Barajas T4 to Aldeasa in November 2003. Many of the leading European operators, such as Dufry Group, Aelia and Alpha Retail, will study the documents closely. The size of the fashion space on offer may also tempt Zara and the Inditex group—one of the most successful retailers at Barcelona El Prat airport—to table a bid at Barajas.
