The first phase of developments has increased the number of airside commercial areas in the pier
Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has officially opened the R535m ($77.7m) extension to the international terminal building at O.R. Tambo International airport. The first phase of development increased the number of airside commercial areas, holding lounges and boarding gates in the pier to provide a better service to the 7.9m passengers that travel through the airport each year.
O. R. Tambo International general manager Chris Hlekane said: This opening marks an important milestone in [our] pursuit to accurately reflect our status as the gateway to Africa. The completion of the second and final phase of the project is scheduled for July next year, when the retail mall extension and new mezzanine lounges will be complete. With one of our largest infrastructural developments now in operation, we are confident that our airport precinct will be a construction-free zone by early 2010.
