Latest results from ACI's monthly survey of 700 airports show worldwide passenger traffic up 2% and aircraft movements down 1% in March compared with March 2000. For the first three months of 2001, passenger traffic was up 3% and flight movements unchanged over the same period last year.

In March 2001 passenger traffic rose by 6% in Asia/Pacific and in Latin America/Caribbean, Africa (+5%) and Europe (+3%). Numbers were unchanged in North America and fell in the Middle East (-2%). Meanwhile over a third of the world's top 30 airports saw their traffic volume shrink. Hardest hit were San Francisco International airport (-8%), Chicago O'Hare (-6%) and Newark (-5%). However, increases were registered at Hong Kong International airport (+12%), Las Vegas (+8%), Bangkok and Toronto (+7%).

Based on the Airport Council International report, overall growth at the surveyed airports is approximately half the rate of increase experienced in 2000, but improving on the first two months of 2001.
