INTERNATIONAL. The entire travel-retail industry could be thrown into chaos if proposals by the World Health Organization (WHO) to ban the tobacco category are adopted under its Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
NETHERLANDS. A pre-order duty-free booking service has been launched by the Schiphol Group at Amsterdam airport.
INTERNATIONAL. The world?s leading travel retailers and suppliers are preparing to gather in London for what promises to be one of the highlights of this industry year: the Global Travel Retail Summit, organised by DFNI publisher Raven Fox.
SINGAPORE. Alpha Retail and its partner Singapore United Tobacco Co have claimed to be the highest bidders for the fragrances and cosmetics tender at Singapore Changi terminal two.
UK. BAA has announced pre-tax profits of £530m ($752m) for the year to March 31, an increase of 15.2%. This was principally the result of a strong performance by its core UK airports business.
ASIA/PACIFIC. The Nuance Group, Dubai Duty Free and Changi airport authority, Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), were among the big winners at the Raven Fox Awards for Travel-Retail Excellence in Asia/Pacific, on a dramatic night in Singapore on May 23.
INTERNATIONAL. The World Health Organization?s proposed ban on duty-free tobacco sales has gained strong support from many countries in Africa and southeast Asia. And retailers in these countries are being urged to act to convince their governments to help overturn the proposal in the WHO?s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
