Duty-free played its part, contributing a sales increase of 21.6% and an impressive 11% rise in spend per passenger. Retail News Analysis

FRANCE. Tax Free World Association and the City of Cannes have forged closer links to improve security and services for exhibitors and delegates at the association's flagship Tax Free World Exhibition in the French city in October. And TFWA is planning other initiatives for the show.
PARAGUAY. The future of duty-free at Asunción Silvio Pettirossi airport is in disarray after the Paraguayan president revoked a decree paving the way for the country?s first airport duty-free stores.
CHINA/FRANCE. China Power Duty Free Group has opened a European office in Paris. The company has appointed former Tax Free World Association chief executive Elysabeth Blachais-Catoire as a consultant to the group.
INTERNATIONAL. Heavy investment in technology is unavoidable if inflight retailing is to be pursued successfully, according to leading airlines and concessionaires. In our technology feature, airlines such as Cathay Pacific and Emirates and concessionaires Alpha Inflight Retail and Inflight Sales Group (ISG) address the issue.
CANADA. The introduction of a devastating tobacco export tax in Canada this Spring was the catalyst for concluding the country's regulatory review of duty-free with minimal changes to the programme, the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) has told DFNI.
S. KOREA. Retail pricing and signposting within the terminal are among the key concerns expressed by passengers in the first 100 days of operation at Seoul Incheon International airport, according to an internal bulletin.
UAE. Dubai Duty Free sales soared 22% in the first half of 2001 compared with the same period last year, in results just released. The surge in sales was driven by increases in categories such as gold, electronics and jewellery.
SWITZERLAND. The Nuance Group will be one of the key strands of parent company Swissair Group's future strategy, the company announced last week. Swissair Group chairman and chief executive Mario Corti announced that "our strategy will revolve around the core airline businesses of Swissair and Crossair, and the market-leading businesses of Gate Gourmet and Nuance".
INTERNATIONAL. DFS Group is feeling the impact of a downturn in Asian travel and spend, according to parent company LVMH Moet Hennessy-Louis Vuitton, which released its half-year results last week.
SINGAPORE. Nuance-Watson (Singapore)?s dramatic triumph in the Changi airport terminal two fragrances and cosmetics tender draws a line under incumbent Saresco Travellers? presence at the airport?and in the region.
KOREA. The South Korean government has approved plans by the Korea National Tourism Organisation (KNTO) to help develop North Korea's Mount Geumgang tourism industry. The Mount Geumgang region is seen as a potentially attractive tourist area, and a ferry service already operates there from South Korea.
